A young man from Winston-Salem, N.C.
It was just another class at St Louis University in the late 90s when a young man came to me and said, "I have always loved Taiji. I am glad the school has a class here, what style do you teach?" Little did I know this young man was about to enter the world of Hun Yuan Taiji. He would not be in St Louis area long, he wanted to know more about the art. His parents wanted him to have a good education and don't worry about that Wushu martial art stuff. He had a good background in martial arts and he wanted to teach Taiji. This young man not only took the class at St Louis University he also came to my class in University City. The class was a 10 mile metro link railway ride, then a three block walk to class. I told him about Master Feng Zhiqiang's system and how it help me. After a year he traveled back home, looked up other instructors / Masters and started to work with them. A few years passed, he contacted me again to thank me for telling him about Hun Yuan Taiji. Michael Joyce worked very hard at this art and now he is a teacher in Winston-Salem, N.C. I only told him of the art and showed him the first section of the 24 form. He did the rest. My point is his motivation and willingness to learn gave him the right to teach under his Masters. I will never forget Sifu Michael Joyce for his efforts. He still pays me respect for the first lesson, but he carried on and made it happen. This is something you can not teach. It’s up to the individual to make progress, to reach for the higher learning. Sifu Michael Joyce did that, I am proud of him for his great accomplishments in Chen Style Xinyi Hunyuan Taijiquan.
